2016 has come to an end, and while one can say it’s not been the best year in so many ways (we’ve had to say good bye to so many legendary actors, actresses and musicians for starters), it has most definitely been an amazing year for our girl! She’s been busy pretty much from the start of the year, until the recent wrapping of the The Light Between Oceans promotion tour. Since the year has now ended, we found it fitting to do a review of Alicia’s year that has gone by – taking a look at her projects, events, photoshoots, interviews and more! With this being Alicia’s busiest year to date, it’s going to be a long summary, but we hope you’ll have as much fun reading about our girl’s year as we have had writing it.

Our girl kicked off the year by attending the 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala, which was held on January 2 in Palm Springs, California. Alicia graced the red carpet in a playful pink dress designed by Erdem. It only took two days before she picked up her first award of the year – as she received the Rising Star award from the hands of her Danish Girl co-star, Amber Heard, at the event.

A few days later, it was revealed that Alicia had made it to W Magazine’s “Best Hollywood Actors of 2015” list, as the unveiled their cover stars in early January. She did a stunning photoshoot by Peter Lindbergh, looking fierce in a bold top. On January 7, she attended the W Magazine’s ‘Best Performances’ Celebration, which was held in Los Angeles. She continued by attending the BAFTA Los Angeles Awards Season Tea and the 40th Annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, both on January 9.

On January 8, the 2016 EE British Academy Film Awards, otherwise known as the BAFTAs, nominations were unveiled – and what we had predicted after her impeccable performances in 2015 was officially proven true; this was going to be our girl’s year! Alicia was nominated not for one, but two, awards: for the leading Actress award for her role in ‘The Danish Girl’, as well as for the Supporting Actress award for her role in ‘Ex Machina’. ‘The Danish Girl’ picked up five nominations in total, for Outstanding British Film, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair, as well as with Leading Actor for Eddie Redmayne. ‘Ex Machina’ also picked up five nominations in total, for Outstanding British Film and Special Visual Effects, with nominations for Alex Garland in Original Screenplay and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

On January 10, Alicia attended the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, as she was nominated for both Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her work in ‘The Danish Girl’ and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work in ‘Ex Machina’. Sadly she did not receive any of the televised awards, as they went to Brie Larson (Room) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs). She did win the red carpet though (at least in our, totally unbiased, eyes), looking like an angel in a Louis Vuitton dress that she paired with dangling diamond earrings. On January 17, the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards became a very emotional night for Alicia, who went up on stage twice to pick up awards. She was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her work in The Danish Girl (you can watch her acceptance speech here), and also got on stage to get the Best Sci-Fi/Horror Mobie award destined to Ex Machina. And what a sight she was! After the simple, yet stunning, white Louis Vuitton apron dress at the Golden Globes, Alicia proved she can rock both ends of the style spectrum by killing it in a Y-neck embellished Mary Katrantzou gown glittering from head to toe.

She then went on to end the first month of the year with a bang, but taking home the Female Actor in A Supporting Role award for her work in The Danish Girl at the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in LA. She was once again wearing a Louis Vuitton dress for the event, and sparkled up the carpet wearing sequins from top to toe.

February proved to be no less busy for our girl, with her appearing at a total of 14 events! She and her The Danish Girl co-stars attended the ‘Gerda Wegener Exhibit’ in Copenhagen on February 2, followed by the ‘The Danish Girl’ Premiere in the same city that evening. On February 6 she was at the Virtuoso’s Award during the 31st Santa Barbara International Film Festival, were she received the Virtuoso’s Award, wearing an outfit by Barbara Casasola. Then two days later, she attended the 88th Nominee Luncheon & 4th Annual Nominees Night. On February 9 she appeared on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ (check out videos from the episode here). Then on February 16, she was at the Louis Vuitton pre-BAFTA Party in London.

Alicia attended the EE British Academy Film Awards on February 14, wearing yet another gorgeous LV gown. She was nominated as Best Actress for her work in the film ‘The Danish Girl’, as well as for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Ex Machina’, but the awards went to Brie Larson and Kate Winslet. Up next followed Mr Porter’s Fifth Birthday Celebration on February 20, before ‘The Film Is GREAT’ Reception in West Hollywood and 9th Annual Women In Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party, both on February 26.

And then we’ve made it to the highlight of 2016 so far, possibly of the whole year (and maybe even Alicia’s career to date): the 88th Annual Academy Awards. What a night that was! We were all rooting for Alicia, who was nominated at the Oscars’ for the very first time for ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ (The Danish Girl), opposite Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol) and Rachel McAdams (Spotlight). And despite the FIERCE competition, our girl was the one who got to bring the event home! This was such a magical night, and we couldn’t be more proud of Alicia – who deserved this award so very much. You can re-watch Alicia receiving her award at youtube here … Ahhh all the goosebumps.

Paris’ Fashion Week kicked off March, and Alicia was present on March 9 at the Louis Vuitton Autumn/Winter 2016 Runway Fashion Show along with designer Nicolas Ghesquière and fellow Louis Vuitton Ambassadors Léa Seydoux, Jennifer Connelly and Selena Gomez. This became Alicia’s last public event in a while, as she took a well deserved break to prepare for the rest of her busy schedule starting back up again in May.

On May 2, Alicia came back into the public eye by attending the 2016 MET Costume Institute Gala. The MET Gala is a black-tie extravaganza held the first Monday in May to raise money for the Costume Institute (a.k.a. the fashion department), the only one of the Met’s curatorial departments that has to fund itself. The event is considered to be one of the biggest of the year, and only the biggest stars get invited – proving how far Alicia has come! She looked fantastic in an unique custom made Louis Vuitton, which sparked both praise and a couple of raised eyebrows. She ended the month by appearing at the Louis Vuitton 2017 Cruise Collection on May 28.

She took, once again, another well-deserved break to come back into the public’s eye during the highly anticipated Jason Bourne promotion. Alicia took part to the film’s world tour, which kicked off on July 3 when the film first premiered in Sydney, Australia. She attended the event with her co-star, Matt Damon and wore a beautiful Rodarte ruffle detail gown. The next day, Alicia and Matt were both guests at the TwitterAU Blue Room. A few days later, they both flew to South Korea, where they attended the ‘Jason Bourne’ press conference and premiere in Seoul. On July 11, Alicia was back on UK soil as she was a guest on the ‘Lorraine’ TV show. Later that day, she attended the ‘Jason Bourne’ premiere in London, where she took our breath away. Our girl looked breathtaking in a silver dress.

The ‘Jason Bourne promotion then continued in France, where the film premiered in the capital city, Paris. Alicia looked absolutely stunning in a custom made Louis Vuitton dress. On the 13th, Alicia was in Madrid and attended the ‘Jason Bourne’ photocall and press conference, and the next, she attended the film’s photocall in Berlin. Sadly, it does not seem she attended a premiere in both cities. The ‘Jason Bourne’ world tour ended when the movie premiered in the United States, in the city of Las Vegas. She also attended a press conference on the 19th.

The promotion of ‘Jason Bourne’ meant one thing: Alicia was the guest on multiple TV shows. On July 21, she was on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’, and a few days later, she was a guest on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’.

On July 28, the promotion of ‘The Light Between Oceans’ quietly kicked off with a press conference being held in West Hollywood. At the beginning of August, our girl was back at promoting ‘Jason Bourne’. She attended the film’s premiere and press conference in Beijing, China. The beginning of September was marked by the 73rd Venice Film Festival, which Alicia attended with Michael Fassbender to promote ‘The Light Between Oceans’. They attended the film’s photocall, and later that evening, attended the world premiere of ‘The Light Between Oceans’.

On September 22, Alicia was in Rome to celebrate the reopening of Bvlgari’s ‘Spanish Steps’. At the beginning of October, she attended the Paris Fashion Week – and obviously, as a Louis Vuitton ambassador, she was at the front row for the brand’s fashion show. Michelle Williams, Jennifer Connelly, Miranda Kerr, and Catherine Deneuve were also among the show’s guests.

On October 15, Alicia attended the BFI London Film Festival Awards as part of the 60th BFI London Film Festival. She looked gorgeous in a gorgeous white gown by Louis Vuitton. A few days later, she attended the European premiere of ‘The Light Between Oceans’, along with Michael Fassbender and director Derek Cianfrance. She looked stunning in a gorgeous custom Louis Vuitton gown for the premiere held in London.

Alicia was back in Northern Europe for her last public appearance of 2016. She was a guest on Norwegian television talk show Skavlan. It is Scandinavia’s biggest talk show, hosted by Fredrik Skavlan, who interviews Norwegian, Swedish and other international guests every weekend.

We’ll now take a look at Alicia’s photoshoots, magazine spreads and projects, as well as share our favorites out of all of them, including our picks for best outfits of the year and best related videos of the year. Out of our picks, you can vote for your favorite – and leave us a comment in the comment section with your own picks!

Photoshoots of the year

We’ve been blessed with a big number of photoshoots this year, starting as early as January when Alicia was photographed by Alexi Lubormirski for Harper’s Bazaar UK. A few days later, it was revealed Alicia would grace the cover of a prestigious magazine Vogue US. The shoot was shot by photographer David Sims. In February, Alicia made the cover of W Magazine, being one the actresses that made it as one of the ‘Best Hollywood Actors of 2015’. The award season having started as early as January, it is no doubt a lot of portraits would be unveiled. Alicia was indeed photographed during the BAFTA LA Awards Season Tea and during the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards. Vanity Fair’s 22nd Hollywood Issue photoshoot was released in early February as well. Alicia was also featured on the February issue of The Wrap, photographed by Patrick Fraser. She was then photographed for People Magazine, which revealed an absolutely gorgeous photoshoot.

She was later photographed for Vulture, by Art Streiber and during the Oscars Nominees Luncheon. One of the most memorable photoshoot of the year obviously is the portraits of Alicia taken during the 2016 Academy Awards. These shots were taken by Andrew Eccles. In 2016, the new Louis Vuitton campaign revealed a new shoot of Alicia: Louis Vuitton Handbags – The Twist Spring/Summer 2016.

With the release of ‘Jason Bourne’, we were blessed a number of new photoshoots and magazine covers. In July, Alicia was photographed for Vogue UK by Alasdair McLellan and then graced the cover of the Sunday Style Magazine. With the ‘Jason Bourne’ promotion going strong this summer, multiple new shots of Alicia for the movie were released (x). She was the photographed by Jérôme Bonnet for the French magazine, Libération and for People Magazine.

One of our favorite photoshoot of the year definitely is the one Alicia did for Vanity Fair for their September issue. She graced the cover of the magazine with such elegance. Alicia was also on the cover of Marie Claire France, revealing a gorgeous new photoshoot. She was also photographed by Todd MacMillan.

With the promotion of ‘The Light Between Oceans’, Alicia was photographed with Michael Fassbender for the Los Angeles Times by Jennifer S. Altman. The duo was also photographed for Entertainment Weekly and for the New York Times.

Back in September, Alicia was in China promoting ‘Jason Bourne’, and in late November a new photoshoot taken during her time in China was revealed – for Modern Weekly Style. She was also photographed by Mario Testino for his famous ‘Towel Series’. Michael and Alicia were also photographed for USA Today.

At the beginning of November, it was revealed Alicia would cover the Winter 2016 issue of Porter Magazine. She was photographed by Ryan McGinley, and got both praise and critique by fashion lovers. Projects of the year

We knew from the start 2016 would be an intense year for Alicia, with two movies coming out. She spent the first half of the year winning awards for ‘The Danish Girl’ but the second half was dedicated to the promotion of ‘Jason Bourne’ and ‘The Light Between Oceans’. ‘Tulip Fever’ was also set to come out in late 2016 but was later pushed back to early 2017.

‘Jason Bourne’ was directed by Paul Greengrass and starred Alicia, Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel and Julia Stiles. The movie was released in July 27, 2016 in the UK and on July 29, 2016 in the United States.

‘Jason Bourne’ became a commercial success, due largely to its modest budget compared to its final gross. The film grossed $162.2 million in the USA & Canada, and $253.1 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $415.2 million against a production budget of $120 million. The film passed the $400 million threshold on October 7, making it the second film in the Bourne franchise to reach this milestone and the second highest-grossing film in the series behind The Bourne Ultimatum. Worldwide, the film opened at number one in 50 markets, scoring the biggest debut in the franchise in 53 markets. In 51 territories, ‘Jason Bourne’ is the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It is the third highest-grossing film of 2016 (behind Warcraft and The Mermaid) that doesn’t involve comic-book superheroes or anthropomorphic animals at its center (including The Jungle Book). The movie also received multiple award nominations, including for the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Teen Choice Awards.

‘The Light Between Oceans’ was directed by Derek Cianfrance and starred Alicia, Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz. The movie was released on September 2, 2016 in the United States and on November 1, 2016 in the UK.

‘The Light Between Oceans’ was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the Touchstone Pictures banner, being the last DreamWorks film to be released under the original agreement with Walt Disney Studios. Disney opted not to give the film a limited release, a method often used by studios for adult dramas, and instead issued the film in general wide release at 1,500 locations with focus on upscale venues. Disney also distributed ‘The Light Between Oceans’ overseas, except for territories in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where distribution was handled by Mister Smith Entertainment through other third-party film distributors; Entertainment One Films in the United Kingdom, Reliance in India, Arthouse in Russia, and Eagle Pictures in Italy. The Light Between Oceans will be released by Touchstone Home Entertainment on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on January 4, 2017.

‘The Light Between Oceans’ grossed $12.5 million in North America and $10.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $22.9 million, against a budget of $20 million. In the United States, the film was released on September 2, 2016 and was projected to gross $6–9 million from around 1,500 theaters in its opening weekend. It grossed $1.4 million on its first day and $4.8 million in its opening weekend, finishing 6th at the box office.

Videos of the year

You will find below some our of best picks for videos of Alicia in 2016. Our top pick is, obviously, her Oscar acceptance speech, but you will also find interviews and the video of Alicia explaining her involvement in the Swedish Cancer Society.

What’s up Next?

We believe 2017 could be as big as 2016 was for Alicia. Indeed, our girl has 3 movies opening this year:
– ‘Submergence‘, directed by Wim Wenders and also starring James McAvoy and Charlotte Rampling.
– ‘Tulip Fever‘, directed by Justin Chadwick and also starring Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan, will open in theatres on February 24, 2017 (USA).
– ‘Euphoria‘, directed by Lisa Langseth and also starring Eva Green and Charles Dance. The movie is slated for release in Sweden on October 6, 2017.

2017 also marks the beginning of the promotion of ‘Tomb Raider‘ – at least, that’s what we’re hoping! -, in which Alicia will reprise the famous role of Lara Croft. The movie, directed by Roar Uthaug, is slated for released in 2018. It will tell the story of Lara Croft, who sets out on her first expedition to finish her father’s archaeological research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name. Tragedy hits when her adventure turns into a fight for survival.

And that’s a wrap! What a crazy year it’s been, filled with so many amazing moments. We’ve loved sharing them all with you, and we can’t wait to continue following Alicia’s career in 2017 – we hope you’ll all join us, as we plan on keeping you updated on everything our girl is up to this year as well. We’re sure she’ll find a way to even outdo 2016, as this girl never stops impressing and amaze us. Happy new year everyone – here’s to the best possible 2017!
