Hello Alicia fans! It’s the last day of 2017, and we’re getting ready to ring in the new year. But first, we’ll continue our new tradition from last year by looking at Alicia’s year in review. While 2017 was a very quiet year for Alicia compared to 2015 and 2016, it has still brought us many new events, photoshoots, career news and interviews. Alicia has had three new films premiere this year, with Submergence and Euphoria hitting various film festivals, while Tulip Fever finally got its long awaited release. The Light Between Oceans was out on DVD in January, and the year was ended with Alicia voicing “Little My” in a Christmas special Moomins film in December. Read on for a full summary of our girl’s year!

The year started off badly, with the news that Tulip Fever had been pushed back to later in 2017. The period drama starring Alicia and Christoph Waltz had previously moved from July 15, 2016 to February 24, 2017, and it was announced in February that it once again had been pushed back. The film, which was originally filmed in 2014, eventually got it’s release in the United States on September 1 this year, grossing only $7 million worldwide against its $25 million budget. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 8% based on 48 reviews, with an average rating of 4.2/10. Considering all the push backs we realized the film was probably not as good as we had hoped; it was not a major surprise that the film did so badly. Still, Alicia’s performance was stellar as always.

Alicia attended her first event of the year on February 25, a Bvlgari Pre-Oscar Dinner at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles ahead of the 2017 Academy Awards. She also attended a rehearsal for the Academy Awards before the dinner. As the 2016 Oscar winner of “Best Supporting Actress”, Alicia was set to present the award to the 2017 winner in the actor category.

On February 26, the 89th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Keeping up the tradition, Alicia presented the award for Best Supporting Actor award to Mahersahala Ali for his work in Moonlight. She wore a ravishing custom made Louis Vuitton embroidered lace dress for the occasion, and we already had a strong contender for best look of the year – in February! She also attended the annual Vanity Fair after party following the awards, wearing another Louis Vuitton piece.

The next coming months were slow on news, as Alicia was busy filming the highly anticpiated Tomb Raider. Principal photography on the film began on January 23, 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa and ended on June 9, 2017 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. Due to her filming commitments, Alicia attended no official events during that period. We did however get the very first promotional images and production stills in March, making us extremely hyped for the upcoming film!

“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,“ Vikander told Vanity Fair via e-mail. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”

Producer Graham King, who won an Oscar as producer of The Departed, adds: “Alicia Vikander brings tremendous depth and vulnerability to this character, which is every bit as important as Lara Croft’s fierce strength, determination, and physicality. Our film takes Lara from her early origins, to the physical and emotional challenges through which she ultimately becomes the Tomb Raider. It’s a complex character, requiring a range of elements and Alicia brings all of that together brilliantly in her portrayal.”

In April we learned that Alicia would be fronting Louis Vuitton’s new collaboration campaign with Jeff Koons. According to The Fashion Spot, the collaboration has been met with mixed reviews. Some describe it as “a joyous art history lesson” while others liken it to “a souvenir bag from a museum gift shop”. We were given two promotional images from the campaign, but Alicia was also featured in Elle Magazine as a part of the promotion (Read more in the magazine section below!).

Once Tomb Raider filming was wrapped, Alicia attended 3 different Bvlgari Parties in 3 days! The first two parties were held at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, and the third event was for the Bvlgari Puo Up Store Ribbon Cutting At The Galeries. She was joined by Bulgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin, as well as Bulgari brand ambassador Lilly zu sayn Wittgenstein at the events. For the occasions, she was wearing a Prabal Gurung dress on June 29, and a Marchesa Notte dress on the 30th. Both days she accessorized with Bulgari jewelry.

August kicked off well, with the announcement that Alicia’s Submergence was set to open the San Sebastian Film Festival. The film, which co-stars James McAvoy, was shot across Berlin, Madrid, Toledo and multiple locations in France and Djibouti, the film was penned by Erin Dignam, based on the book by J.M. Ledgard. Only a few days later, it was announced that Alicia’s other 2017 film Euphoria would be premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform Section. The director-driven section of the festival has been gaining momentum during its three-year run, and last year, it turned out a best picture winner with ‘Moonlight’. August continued on spoiling us with great new content, with Alicia attending a VIP Preview Screening of Tulip Fever in a Rodarte dress on August 13, held in Soho, London. Then on August 16, she appeared at the Grand Opening Of The ‘SerpentiForm’ Exhibition At Singapore’s ArtScience Museum.

In September, Alicia headed to Toronto to promote her films Euphoria and Submergence! We were expecting her to appear at the Submergence premiere on September 10, but due to flight delay, she was unable to make it there in time. The disappointment was big, but it was quickly replace with excitement when Alicia showed up at Variety’s Studio Presented by AT&Y at the festival, on the morning of September 11. She was there with film director Lisa Langseth. In the evening, the cast attended the world premiere of the film – for the occasion, she was wearing an absolutely lovely Louis Vuitton Resort 2018 dress! The following day, Alicia and Lisa held a Q&A following an extra screening of the film. The festival also spoiled us with several new portrait sessions (you can find them all in our photoshoot section below), as festivals so often do. Videos of Alicia at the festival can be found in our original TIFF post here. Lisa and Alicia also stepped by several different magazine studios, doing a string of interviews about the film. When asked what the toughest thing about this film was, she answered:

I was so drawn to this portrait of these two extremely strong women and their relationship. They’re so different and have chosen their paths in life, and yet they’re so deeply connected because of their family bond. It’s a relationship you’re born into, and it is so deep. But the sisters, all their scenes have different levels of them trying to reach one another — as soon as the other person says something that annoys the other, they will be straight onto it. It’s tricky with those nuances, but it was fun to explore.

We thought August had been a great month, but with the Toronto International Film Festival in September, it was pretty much a tied. Then came the tie breaker, making September our definite favorite month of the year: The release of the first official Tomb Raider trailer! It was premiered on The Late Late Show With James Corden on September 19, where Alicia was a guest to promote the film. She was there with Luke Wilson and Zach Woods, and they talked about celebrity crushes, how Alicia got herself locked out of her apartment once and their upcoming projects! On September 22, Alicia arrived in Spain for the 65th San Sebastian Film Festival, where she would promote Submergence once again! The film opened the festival, and since it’s the highest-profile festival in the Spanish-speaking world, it has a significant industry presence. But that didn’t phase director Wim Wenders, who was there alongside Alicia. “The pressure of the opening film doesn’t really concern me,” the director said before further dismissing any concerns over criticisms of his films. “I beg your pardon but I don’t read my reviews. I read reviews of other people’s films but with mine I just ask my wife.” He said that while good reviews can over-inflate your ego, bad ones “make you feel like s***t, and I think it’s best not to feel either.”

At Friday’s press conference, dressed immaculately in a white top and high-waited black trousers, Vikander came across as lively, charming, and multi-lingual – in the film she plays a half-Swedish half-Australian marine biologist with a touch of English ancestry. About the first thing she said at San Sebastián that she knew some Spanish.

They spent the afternoon greeting fans, ahead of a photocall which blessed us with a huge batch of new photos. They also attended a press conference, before it was set for the big premiere in the evening.

On September 25, Alicia celebrated CDLP 1st birthday with a Crayfish Party at Mark’s Club in London! She was there with guests such as CDLP co-founders Andreas Palm and Christian Larson, and she looked incredible. Continuing her busy September, on the 29th she attended the Zurich Film Festival to promote Euphoria.

After a busy September, Alicia went for a more relaxed October – attending only 3 events. All Louis Vuitton related! On October 2, Alicia was a special guest at the boutique opening of Louis Vuitton at the Place Vendome. The following day, she was a guest at the Paris Fashion Week for the Louis Vuitton Show (Front Row). Then on October 26, she attended the Louis Vuitton Exhibition “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez“. Curated by Olivier Saillard, the exhibition retraces the adventure of the House of Louis Vuitton from 1854 to the present.

In November it was revealed Alicia would be fronting yet another Louis Vuitton Campaign – this time the new Cruise 2018 collection and their advertisement campaign “The Spirit of Travel“. The collection is designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, and reflects a search for freedom and adventure in the other part of the world, perfectly shaping the spirit of Louis Vuitton’s journey. Alicia posed with the Twist bags, the new classic designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, and Capucines, whose elegance perfectly represents the savoir-faire of the maison according to Louis Vuitton themselves.

Towards the end of the year, Alicia attended two more events: first up, the Edward Enniful Dinner at the River Cafe, to celebrate British Vogue‘s December issue on November 7. She wore a dress from the new Chloe collection, and posed with Edward Enniful (British Vogue’s new editor-in-chief). Then on December 5, she went to the grand opening of the Bulgari Dubai Resort in the United Arab Emirates. Joined at the celebration by her close friend Jon Kortjarena and Bella Hadid, she looked stunning in a Jonathan Simkhai dress.

Alicia ended the year by voicing the newest addition to the Moomins series, Moomins and the Winter Wonderland with fellow Swedes Bill Skarsgård and Stellan Skarsgård. You can check out a behind the scenes clip below!

Magazine Features

Alicia’s first Magazine feature of the year was a cover spot on the April 14th issue of Elle France to promote Louis Vuitton’s latest collection. She covered the same magazine in September, though this time the US version. These were the only magazine features we would get this year that featured a new photoshoot, but we also got a closer look at Tomb Raider in the October issue of Empire! All in all it was a pretty tame year Magazine-vise, but the two stunning Elle features definitely makes up for it – quality over quantity 😉

Photoshoots

Thanks to her many appearances at film festival this year, we’ve been blessed with some beautiful new portraits! In addition to the festivals, her two spreads in Elle + a special feature in Harper Bazaar gave us a good amount of new shoots. Very few in comparison to 2015 and 2016, but with Tomb Raider coming up next year, we know the shortage on new shoots and magazines is only temporary!

Euphoria

Now we’ll take a closer look at Alicia’s two big releases this year! Euphoria is produced by Vikarious Production, a company launched by Alicia and her London-based agent Charles Collier. It’s their first film, and it was directed by Alicia’s close friend Lisa Langseth. For those who are still unaware of what it’s about, it’s a Swedish-British-German drama film about two sisters in conflic who travel through Europe towards a mystery destination. Alicia playes alongside Eva Green. The film currently has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating 3.9/10. But while it wasn’t greatly received by the critics at first, it still got several good reviews following the festival screenings.

Submergence

Alicia’s other big film release this year was Submergence with James McAvoy. Wim Wenders directed the film, from a screenplay by Erin Dignam, and it was based upon the novel by J.M Ledgard. The film is a love story that takes us into the extremely different worlds of our two protagonists, Danielle Flinders (Alicia) and James More (James McAvoy). They meet by chance in a remote hotel in Normandy where they both prepare for a dangerous mission. It currently has a 13% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 3.3/10. The audience score is a little higher, with 20%.

The Wedding

And now to one of the biggest events of 2017! While it might not have been Alicia’s biggest or best year career wise, it was certainly a major year for her personally – she married her boyfriend (now husband) Michael Fassbender! The two grew close while filming The Light Between Oceans. The two evidently tied the knot at Agroturismo Can Marti, an eco-hotel in Ibiza, Spain in October. Alicia showcased her beautiful ring at the Volez, Voguez, Voyagez – Louis Vuitton Exhibition. We know Alicia likes to keep her private life very private, which is why there won’t be any photos from the wedding or parties posted here at the site unless any are one day officially released. But I would like to wish my warmest congratulations and well wishes to the newlyweds!

That’s a wrap on Alicia’s 2017! As for The Alicia Vikander Vault, our site has gone through some major changes this year. We moved from our old domain at alicia-vikander.us to the current avikander.net, and changed our site name from Alicia Vikander Online to The Alicia Vikander Vault! While it led to some downtime, I’m very happy with the final result – and I can’t wait to continue updating you all on everything Alicia is up to in 2018. It’ll definitely be a massive year for her, with the release of Tomb Raider coming up this March. She’ll also be doing an action/thriller titled Freak Shift with her The Man From U.N.C.L.E co-star Armie Hammer!
